Healthcare Management Solutions, LLC (HMS), Information & Quality Healthcare (IQH) continue to recruit Medicare beneficiaries and all people ages 18 and over with diabetes in the State of Mississippi for diabetes self-management education classes. HCD International (HCDI) serves as the Mississippi Health First initiative’s coordinating entity and coordinates all activities taken place (data, strategic marketing, events, etc.). Community efforts that occurred recently included:
September 8, 2010: HCDI, HMS and IQH staff met with Dr. Warren Jones and staff regarding sustaining the Mississippi Health First project in the State of Mississippi. Topics discussed consisted of accrediting federally qualified health centers, research on legislative issues on reimbursement for diabetes education, sources of data from various studies, as well as discussing pharmaceutical medication programs in the State of Mississippi. A follow-up meeting is scheduled early November 2010. |

September 22-24, 2010: More than 700 public health professionals attended the 2010 Mississippi Public Health Association Annual Conference and Business Meeting in Tunica, Mississippi. This year's theme was "Building a Healthy Mississippi...One Community at a Time." There were numerous speakers and sessions on important public health and professional development topics. Exhibitors from the health care industry as well as other state agencies attended the conference. The Mississippi Health First project was well received at the meeting and numerous contacts were made throughout the State of Maryland. September 30, 2010: Sustaining Together by Advancing Resources (STAR) Meeting was hosted by HCD International and held on September 30th at the Meridian Housing Authority. The meeting was attended by various representatives of the Meridian faith-based community, civic leaders, and representatives from health-related organizations and residents of local housing communities. The purpose of the STAR initiative is to sustain diabetes education after the Mississippi Health First initiative has ended and to continue recruiting and educating people living with diabetes in the State of Mississippi. The STAR initiative will be sustained in the community through local grass roots and community-based organizations. The next meeting of the STAR initiative is scheduled during the week of October 18-22. October 8, 2010: The meeting on “Eliminating Health Disparities (Healthy Eating and Obesity),” was sponsored by Jackson State University and held at the Hilton Hotel in Ridgeland, Mississippi. |

October 13th - 15th: The conference is presented by Network 8, Incorporated, in cooperation with the MS Kidney Foundation. The conference will be held at the Beau Rivage Resort Hotel in Biloxi, MS. October 14, 2010: the American Diabetes Association is sponsoring “Diabetes Exposed” Health and Wellness Fair event at the North Park Mall, 1200 E. County Line Road, Jackson, MS, from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Screenings, Education and Fitness Activities will be available. “Everything You Need To Know About Diabetes Under One Roof.” On October 21, 2010: the City of Hattiesburg, The United Way of South Mississippi, Pine Grove Behavioral Health, Children & Defense Fund, Hattiesburg Public Schools, Parents for Public Schools, commUNITY care, Pine Below Mental Health and Mississippi State University Extension Service, is hosting the “Unity in the Global Community” at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, in Hattiesburg, MS. October 23rd through January 29th : Network 8 and the MS Kidney Foundation will sponsor six (6) Statewide events – Project leaders will coordinate with each contact person to set up a booth to exhibit and disseminate information on diabetes self-management and schedule DSME classes for potential candidates. October 23, 2010: The Refuge Temple Nurses Guild will sponsor a health fair from 10:00am – 2:00pm at 4456 Medgar Evers Boulevard, Jackson, Mississippi. A representative from Healthcare Management Solutions, LLC, will provide information about the Mississippi Health First initiative and free diabetes education classes in the State of Mississippi. October 26 - 27, 2010: HMS is presenting its 5th Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) Train-the-Trainer Program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Conference Center located at the Jackson Medical Mall. 350 W. Woodrow Wilson Avenue, Jackson, MS. Registration begins at 8:30an on October 26th and the program is scheduled from 9:00am to 5:00pm. On October 27th, the program is scheduled from 9an to 5pm. Guest speakers are as follows: Dr. Alfio Rausa, Dr. Janice Bacon, Dr. Sonja Fuqua, Donna Speed, MS, RD, Ron Henry, R. Ph., and Dr. Felisa Wilson-Simpson. HMS staff: Karlos Thomas, Margrett Davis and Mickey Stuart, and Michael Jones will also present at the training. Upon completion of the Train-the-Trainer course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, Project Dulce: Getting to Know Diabetes. October 28, 2010: The Wetly Medical Center, Senior Circle, Petal Chamber of Commerce will host a Senior Health Event from 9:00am until noon at the Petal Civic Center. Free health screenings and information are scheduled from 9:00am to 11:00am. The event is sponsored by the Bancorp South Bank, City of Petal, Forrest County Board of Supervisors, DuFour Petroleum and Wesley Medical Center. For more information, call 601-268-8192. Every year: thousands of people participate in National Diabetes Association events and fundraisers to increase awareness of the disease and raise needed funds. These activities can include local walks, expos, or other community and workplace events. November 4-5, 2010: The Mississippi Rural Health Association will sponsor its annual conference, “Looking Over the Fence: Help from Mississippi’s Backyard” at the Natchez Convention Center, 211 Main Street, Natchez, Mississippi 39120. November 6, 2010: The American Diabetes Association is sponsoring a cycling event from 7:30am to 4:00pm in the Sal and Mookies Fondren District, located at 565 Taylor Street, Jackson, Mississippi. The event is powered by volunteers to benefit the American Diabetes Association. Ridin for Diabetes is a unique opportunity for businesses, families or co-workers to come together to fight diabetes, raise awareness, and build a sense of community! November 12-14, 2010: The purpose of this program is to bring together nurses, community members, and community leaders to allow valuable dialogue and exchange of ideas for promoting healthy behaviors and breaking down health disparities in the African American community, with targeted sessions on Obesity, Heart Disease, HIV prevention, Program Development, and Community Collaboration. Target Audience: Nurses, student nurses, public health, government and non-profit agencies interested in exploring better ways to reach the community we serve, building coalitions and networking, sharing effective programs and resources November 14, 2010: World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public spotlight. This year sees the second of a five-year campaign that will address the growing need for diabetes education and prevention programs. Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013. The campaign slogan for 2010 is “Let’s take control of diabetes. Now! IQH continues to provide diabetes self-management education (DSME) to the MS Band of Choctaw Indians at the Choctaw Health Center.
