The Birmingham News newspaper recently printed an article regarding working and breastfeeding. The Business Case for Breastfeeding upcoming training is spotlighted in this article which also highlights the national initiative and issues.

CA Labor Commissioner Cites Company For Not Providing Lactation Accommodation to Employee (June 20, 2008).
The California Labor Commission recently issued its first citation for non-compliance with the CA lactation accommodation law.

CDC Releases Data on Breastfeeding-Related Maternity Practices at Hospitals and Birth Center” (June 13, 2008).
The CDC has released the first-ever data on breastfeeding-related maternity practices at Hospitals and Birth Centers for the US in 2007 in their latest edition of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

…The CDC has released its latest data which showed that breastfeeding is at an all time high. The Healthy People 2010 goals for breastfeeding (77%) have also been met, two years early!

Alabama Breastfeeding Coalition has just launched a new website to promote their new "Working and Breastfeeding" recognition project. The site includes some new resources they've created.

ILCA has just announced that they will develop and provide materials with a "Directory of IBCLCs Providing Workplace Lactation Support" to help rally IBCLCs world-wide who are available to assist employers and working mothers. The new directory will be posted in May and promoted widely with employers. This directory was developed in direct response to "The Business Case" project as a way to support this initiative. It will be available at the following website:
United Nations Breastfeeding Advocacy Team (UNBAT) has just released a gender budgeting document that ILCA has co-produced. It's called "Financing for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women" and includes a budget for the economics of breastfeeding by looking at the dollar value of breast milk. It's available at the following website:
New York recently enacted the "Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act." In response to this new legislation, the Senate and Assembly moved very quickly to demonstrate their compliance with the new legislation by opening lactation rooms on every floor of the Legislative Office Building (LOB).

Colorado Working and Breastfeeding Legislation
The "Workplace Accommodation for Nursing Mothers" recently passed in the Colorado State legislature. When Cate Colburn-Smith testified at the House hearing, she was approached by a woman who wanted information on how to justify an employee lactation program at her workplace, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (part of the U.S. Department of Commerce) which is a male dominated organization. Cate shared some things she remembered from our "Business Case" training curriculum with this woman [she was on the expert review panel for the Curriculum materials], and recently the woman wrote her to say that the data was *exactly* what the HR people needed. They gave the approval today for implementing a lactation program, and even offered an additional $1,000 to decorate the room.
New Jersey Family Leave Legislation Passed (May 2, 2008).
NJ Governor Jon Corzine signed legislation on May 2 that will allow most employees to take up to 6 weeks of paid leave to care for a newborn, ailing relative, or newly adopted child. NJ is the third state to enact such legislation.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy has announced their 2008 theme for World Breastfeeding Week: "Mother Support: Going for the Gold" to complement the Olympics. World Breastfeeding Week is August 1-8. The theme focuses on the role of employers, healthcare providers, and other groups that impact mothers' decisions about infant feeding. It is the perfect complement to MCHB’s The Business Case for Breastfeeding project, and since lactation advocates everywhere conduct promotional activities en masse during this time, we expect to see The Business Case for Breastfeeding Resource Kit playing a key role for many groups.

Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2007
The Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2007 was introduced on May the 9th, and amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964, in order to protect breastfeeding by new mothers, as well as to provide for a performance standard for breast pumps, and also to provide tax incentives to encourage breastfeeding.
